As soon as someone finds out that I have a blog they immediately ask, “What kind of blog do you write?” What they mean is, “What’s your niche?” and I know they expect a heavy pitch full but I simply respond with, “I write a southern lifestyle blog.”

They then look at me curiously and I know that they are then thinking,
“What is a lifestyle blog?”
Most of the time they ask, sometimes they don’t, but the curious look is always there. I understand though, a lot of the time non-bloggers just don’t “get it”. It can be tough because lifestyle blogs can be challenging to describe. There are a lot of blogging niches out there and some of those niches are much more defined than others.
Blogging niches like Food blogs, Fashion blogs, Technology blogs, Career blogs, Pet blogs, Decor blogs, etc have a very clear focus and are easily described to potential readers. A lifestyle blog, however, is very general but that is not a bad thing and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Speaking frankly, I’m quite sick of hearing that a lifestyle blog is not a “niche” and that you have to “niche down” in order to be successful. That is absolute bullshit (pardon my language) and it’s a lie that needs to stop being perpetuated. So long as you own your lifestyle you are going to be absolutely fine as a lifestyle blogger. In fact, there are quite a lot of very successful lifestyle bloggers and there’s no reason why you can’t be one of them.

Sure, it’s easier to define your lifestyle blog if you have a unique POV about your lifestyle. By that, I mean, think about what makes you and your family unique.
Here are a few examples of potential lifestyle blog POV’s:
- Single Living
- Urban Living
- Rural Living
- Blended Family
- Multi-Racial Family
- Dual Income, No Kids
- Large Family
- Regional Living (Southern, Mid-West, West Coast, New England)
- Nomadic Lifestyle
- Faith-Based Lifestyle
- All-Natural Living
- Handmade Lifestyle
- Polyamory Lifestyle
- and on…and on…and on…
I chose to focus down on Southern Living so I share from that POV. My readers know I’m going to talk about life in Georgia, share Southern places and landmarks, talk about Southern food (a new category for FBL), marriage and life with a southern twist. That’s how I live so it’s what I share.
Still, it’s the “lifestyle” part that seems to confuse people but truly, it’s not so hard. Here are a few categories that I usually see on the blogs defined as a lifestyle blog.
- Home Decor
- DIY / Crafts
The categories change depending on which lifestyle blogger you’re talking to but it’s usually some combination of those things and I think it’s awesome. Lifestyle bloggers talk about anything and everything. Life is awesome and lifestyle bloggers? We share life.
