We’re Prepping for Halloween

It’s already starting to look a little Halloween-ish around here! I know, I know, it’s only September but friends, I couldn’t help myself! Halloween was the very first holiday my husband and I ever spent together and I can’t help but feel extra excited every year when it comes around. Back in 2010 (our first year together) we strung skeleton lights outside on the back porch, carved Jack-o-Lantern’s, bought a skeleton nutcracker (which we named Steve after my cousin, lol), and spent the whole weekend at an Edgar Allen Poe movie festival downtown.
Oh, and we also dressed up our chihuahua. That took a bit of pleading on my part but I convinced my honey. 😉 The dog didn’t like it but he sure looked cute!
Since it’s only September I know I’d get a side-eye from my husband if I busted out the Halloween wreaths and lights right now so instead I’m slowly sneaking in the Fall while he’s trying to cling to the last bits of Summer. I started sneaking in Fall when I ran out after work today to take care of a few errands and saw this cute white glass pumpkin (see similar).
I also ran into PetSmart to grab more food for the dogs and new chew toys since they were out of chips and I need something to distract them for at least 30 minutes sometimes. I like to think of them as cartoons for dogs. LOL. I know parents try to limit screen time for their kids but admit it…sometimes you plop them down in front of the TV so you can get a few minutes of peace. It’s the same way with clingy lap dogs (and yes, I just compared dogs to kids).
I was on my way out of the store with the food and the treats when I spotted this sign, “Buy 2 Get 1 Free! Halloween Toys” and I froze. I’ve had to toss quite a few dog toys lately because the pups have torn holes in them and started tearing the cotton fluff out. As soon as the filling starts coming out I toss it because it’s not good for the dogs to eat cotton and my dogs will eat anything.
Naturally, I bought the Thrills & Chills toys.
I bought the mummy, the witch, and the bat. The dogs went crazy immediately. I know they can smell new toys inside the bag because the moment I walked through the front door they were all over me demanding whatever I had in the PetSmart bag. I mean, I guess maybe they smelled the food or the treats but when I put the bowls of food down they didn’t seem interested. They wanted the toys.
They always want the toys.
ALL the toys.
A few weeks ago I thought I was being creative and home-y when I bought a long low basket to put on the bottom shelf of our coffee table to hold the dog toys. I figured it was pretty, easy access for me, and it kept them off the floor. What I didn’t figure was that the dogs would realize their toys were in the basket and would go to the basket themselves to get them out. Oops!
After getting home I spent the first 30 minutes throwing Halloween toys over and over and over and over again. I just couldn’t resist those sweet faces begging me to throw that dang witch just one more time.
At only $3.99 a piece the toys were worth it, don’t you think? I mean, I know they won’t last til Halloween. My dogs will have holes torn in them by the end of the week but at least I’m starting to trickle Halloween in to our home. 😉
