Earlier this week I received my first Sun Basket and I went live on Facebook for the unboxing. As y’all saw, I loved it!

When we lived in Atlanta the grocery store was about 2 miles away. It was no big deal to go shopping every 2 – 3 days for items we needed but that’s not the case here in Charleston. Now, we live on the top of a mountain and there’s no such thing as a quick trip to the grocery store. It can easily turn in to an all day adventure. I’ve also been having a bit of trouble locating our favorite vegetarian ingredients here. Extra-firm tofu and quinoa aren’t nearly as plentiful. Although, locally grown vegetables are plentiful at the nearby farmer’s market. Still yet, I find myself in a position where I’m looking for ways to make my life easier. One of the simplest ways to do that is to start having meals delivered to my front door. Enter…Sun Basket!

I tried two other delivery services before and found them both disappointing. Sun Basket was perfection, especially for vegetarians like my husband. The box arrived early in the morning (around 9:30am) and I immediately refrigerated it. #SorryNotSorry but at 9:30am I am nowhere near ready for a FB Live video, haha. Then, I sat down to flip through their recipe book. Unlike other companies, Sun Basket actually send you the recipes for all of the weekly options. It’s so much better than the flip cards from other services. Not to mention I can create the other recipes on my own time if I choose, and I might.

I made the quinoa and zucchini fritters the day the box arrived and they were delicious! Brandon said they were one of the best meals I’ve made all year, haha. I’m sure he didn’t mean that as insulting as it came out. Like, thanks Sun Basket for giving my husband better meals than I ever could. 😉 They were a little bit softer than expected. I think that’s because I didn’t squeeze enough of the moisture out of the zucchini. I tried but it wasn’t quite enough. Bummer. I added a bit of panko before frying the fritters and they were perfection. This is one of the easiest meals I’ve ever made and it was so good!

The only things you need to have in your kitchen to make the meals provided by Sun Basket are salt, pepper, olive oil, and basic kitchen tools.

I didn’t have a potato masher to help me mash the white beans so I just used the bottom of a clean glass. Sometimes you have to improvise, you know? I don’t know what happened to the masher I had but I’m chalking it up to being lost in the move. Oh well. If something had to go missing I’m happy it’s a kitchen gadget over something more valuable.

Sun Basket FAQ’s

After I did my FB Live video about Sun Basket, a few people sent me over questions I wanted to answer here. So, here we go…

Was the box cold?

YES! The box was dropped off at my apartment door about 9 – 9:30am and the ice pack in the bottom of the box had everything nice and chilled. I work from home so I was here when it arrived and was able to immediately refrigerate it. If I hadn’t been home, I feel confident it could have sat outside and stayed chilled for hours.

Was the produce fresh?

It sure was and I tried to show that in the FB Live video. I know it was hard to tell through the packaging but I was very impressed with the freshness of everything. I think the peach may have been a little bit under-ripe but I made that meal first. If I had made something else and let the peach ripen for another day it would have been perfect.

Are the meals really something I (or my family) would eat?

Well, I’m not 100% sure since I likely don’t know you or your family IRL but I will say that the meals seem totally reasonable to me. None of the ingredients were crazy (unless you consider zucchini, white beans, lemon, or peppers to be crazy). Before you order your box you’re able to choose the meals you want. We chose the vegetarian options but they had steak, chicken, and fish options as well. If you don’t like the selection that week, skip the week.

My family is (enter dietary preference here), do they have options for me?

Probably. They have standard omnivore meals but they also offer paleo, gluten-free, and vegetarian options. Their menu changes week to week but yes, they probably have something that suits your diet.

For other questions, you can get more info about Sun Basket offerings and pricing on their website.

I joked with my husband that between Sun Basket and Amazon Pantry, I might never go grocery shopping again. Obviously I’m kidding because no one delivers milk and other perishables to our mountain…yet.

If you missed the FB Live, you can watch it right here, right now.

Interested in trying Sun Basket for yourself? I have options for you! You can either get 3 meals free or score $35 off your first box. I recommend the 3 free meals but it’s your call.
