The “Just Dessert” Date

Sometimes the best date nights are the ones that are simple, easy, and affordable. After deciding to dramatically cut back on our eating out budget we have started to opt for date night that is just dessert.

Lately my husband and I have noticed that one of the biggest drains on our finances has been eating out. It’s just too easy to do. We both work full-time and we don’t have any kids so when we are home from work it’s simple to say, “Let’s go grab dinner.” After all, cooking for two can be difficult (at least that’s how I rationalize it). There are so few recipes that are designed for two people so I have to do math to cut the recipe in half (again, I’m rationalizing…) and there are always those leftovers I know we’ll never eat but I save anyway. Eventually, my refrigerator will start to stink from the leftovers we never ate and it just turns out to be a mess.

It’s just easier to go out, so go out we do. We just do it too often. It also doesn’t help that Atlanta is one of the best places to live in the USA if you love dining out (we have the best restaurants and they are everywhere!). It’s just a hard habit to break. So, with that, enter our new favorite date night idea – Just Desserts!

Sweet treats for our "Just Desserts" date night

It has become our new indulgence and it’s become our reward to ourselves for cooking at home all week long. In our area of Atlanta we are surrounded by tons of great bakeries and coffee shops. Two of them have the most amazing fruit tarts and desserts in the area.

My husband is a big fan of anything with apples and pears. I prefer overly decadent desserts like this one chocolate mousse with a dark chocolate shell that I get at Crema when we go there. Our “Just Desserts” date lets us both indulge in our favorite sweet treats without breaking our budget on expensive meals. It also helps because I don’t keep sweet treats in our home and I don’t bake so if we don’t go out, we never get desserts.

The other night I treated myself to a Napoleon and oh my God, it was one of the best desserts I’ve had all year! We always have two options – restaurant or coffee shop.

This is how we do it…

Just Desserts at a Restaurant

When we go to a restaurant we always tell the server that we are only there for cocktails dessert. They are busy and we like to let them know early on that we are going to be an easy table. We will each order a cocktail and a dessert. I like to pair mine for the best flavor combination. Popular options are:

Wine & Fruit Tarts

Daiquiris & Fruit Tarts

Stout Beer & Chocolate

Margaritas & Cinnamon

Of course, we almost always share at least one bite with each other. Although, my husband doesn’t like chocolate so I usually come out ahead in that deal. The other night he ordered a peach crumb cake and as soon as I stole one bite of it I instantly regretted my brownie sundae. His was so good! The other night we went to a nearby place called Lucky’s Burgers & Brew and discovered they have a “Dessert Burger” which is two chocolate chip cookie “buns” with a brownie and ice cream in between. It is served with cinnamon apple “fries”.  We were too full to try it but we are going back for it for sure.

Just Desserts at a Coffee Shop

This is our favorite “Just Desserts” date night because we love coffee and cake. I always go with a chai latte and my husband always orders a vanilla latte and then we just chill out in the coffee shop sipping our coffee and savoring our dessert.

We have tried so many different treats lately since we are going out specifically for dessert. We used to go out for dinner thinking we would get a dessert at the end of it but then we’d be too full even though the desserts look so good! I’ve had peanut butter mousse, raspberry tarts, and lemon meringues.

It’s by far our favorite new date night!

Do you ever go out for just dessert? What’s your favorite treat? Do you prefer a dessert date night in a restaurant or a coffee shop?
