Hike at Old Mill Park

One of my favorite parts of our recent weekend getaway to Lanier Islands was being able to walk around the lake and explore lakeside. I know that it sounds like such a small thing but living where we do, being outside in the “wilderness” like that is a novelty and it’s nice. It’s one of the reasons I love our trips home to West Virginia each year. As soon as we got home from our trip I started talking to Brandon about our next outdoor adventure. I was hoping to go to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park but at the last minute we opted to go to Old Mill Park in Roswell, Georgia instead.

It was genuinely the better choice because it’s been so long since we’ve been out on any kind of hike together we were completely unprepared for anything other than a simple hike. Old Mill Park is on Vickery Creek in Roswell, Georgia and it’s a hike you can adjust based on your fitness level and ambition for the day. A lot of the trails there are relatively flat and easy so if you’re just looking to walk around and explore without working too hard, that’s a good place to go.

Far Beyond Love at Old Mill Park in Roswell, Georgia

The whole park was beautiful. My only regret was that I didn’t bring a journal with me so I could sit and write. I’m planning to take a picnic the next time we go back so we can just find a little spot and relax in the sun.

There is a man-made waterfall at Old Mill Park and a lot of people go swimming there when it is warm enough. I don’t know how warm it has to be to be “warm enough” but there was no one swimming when we were there and it was about 75-degrees outside. I’m sure if you go out there in July or August it’s swimmable.

Old Mill Park also had picnic tables and barbecue grills. There were a ton of picnic spots, an old covered bridge, and tons of historical plaques because it’s also apparently a historic Civil War site. It was such a great place but we didn’t stay long enough to see the whole place. There are trails we haven’t taken so we have to go back and explore those areas. Plus we found out that it’s dog-friendly so of course we want to take the pups.

I’m sure I killed my Instagram followers when we were there because I couldn’t stop sharing IG Stories of the waterfalls. I must have shared at least 10 or 11 of them during the 3 hours we were at the park. Lol. It was just so pretty and it seems like everywhere we went was just a bit more beautiful than the place we left.

There were also a ton of photographers there! It’s a popular place for families to take their family photos and it was so cute seeing everyone pose for their portraits. It was a great place for people-watching (which y’all know I love to do).

We’ve also been talking a lot about spending spring getting ready for our family trip to West Virginia this July. We have each set our own fitness goals but I feel like I’m struggling with reaching mine over the same old excuse – time. The weekend hike was perfect for giving me a big day of activity plus being out in the sun is fantastic for the super pale skin I’m rocking these days.

I’m not sure about you, but I’m definitely glad that spring is here and we can get back outside to enjoy it.

  1. Oh so jealous! The leaves haven’t started coming out yet here in the Boston area. I am eager for hiking season, though I ended up with a huge deer tick on me that I didn’t notice till it grew so big last fall. I’ll be more careful this year. I’ve never been to Old Mill Park when I’ve gone hiking around Atlanta, but I’ll remember it for my next trip. It look so beautiful! What a nice day!

    • Old Mill Park is just north of Atlanta in Roswell, Georgia. If you go, stop by Lucky’s Burger & Brew for lunch afterward. It’s dog-friendly if you have a pup with you and they make some of my favorite burgers around here. It’s only about a mile or so from the Mill.
