Summer Entertaining with the Heart of Haiti

Entertaining this summer with the Heart of Haiti collection from Macy's

I received a complimentary Sunflower Metal Lantern from Everywhere Society as compensation for this post.

About three weeks ago my husband and I moved into a new apartment in a suburb just north of Atlanta. Our new place has a much bigger kitchen, two huge bathrooms with spa tubs, an outdoor balcony and a community ‘Zen Garden’! Friends, believe me when I tell you that I absolutely love the Zen Garden! There are a few outdoor tables and benches, a bbq area, and an outdoor fireplace so it is absolutely the perfect place for a little outdoor summer entertaining. I told my husband a few days ago that we need to plan a bbq out there and invite a few people over just to prove that summer barbecue’s aren’t just for carnivores! Vegetarians can bbq too! After all, we have black bean burgers, quinoa zucchini burgers, veggie kabobs, etc.

The Zen Garden here on the property is beautiful! I often sneak out there to read a book or just to sit in the sun for a while with the pups. I’ve really missed spending time outdoors and I’m glad that summertime is finally upon us. I’ve started to stock up on summertime recipes, outdoor plateware and a few personal summer decor items that I can use to personalize the community garden during our bbq. One of the best things I’ve added to my collection lately is my new Heart of Haiti Sunflower Metal Lantern. It’s gorgeous, isn’t it? Gorgeous and handmade by a local metal artisan in the town of Croix des Bouquets in Haiti.

Ashley with Macy's Heart of Haiti Lantern

I love having pieces in my home that are personal, hand-crafted, or unique. I blame my high school history teacher. His entire classroom was full of items he had picked up during his international travels. Every item in the room had a long story attached to it and that was so much nicer than a bunch of things that were bought at the mall. I’ve never had pieces like that in my home but I feel like I have a piece of that now with this Heart of Haiti lantern. The Heart of Haiti line is available through Macy’s. You see, Macy’s joined forces with the Clinton Bush Haiti fund shortly after the devastating earthquake back in January of 2010 and they developed the Heart of Haiti product line to help support over 550 local Haitian artisans and their families; artisans like Pierre Michele Dorestant who is pictured below with his youngest daughter. He sends all of his children to school thanks to orders from Macy’s Heart of Haiti line!

While other companies and charities have come and gone, Macy’s has remained in Haiti since 2010 and continues to provide employment to over 550 artisans through the Heart of Haiti line. I am so proud to have this lantern in my home now. I was so excited when the box arrived and I saw that it was my lantern. The quality is amazing! I am planning to hang it up outside on my balcony and take it with me to decorate the outdoor table in the zen garden when we entertain out there this summer.

Lantern from Heart of Haiti

I mentioned giving back in my post on Monday when I wrote about what to do with the extra money when you get a pay raise. My husband and I are already committed to a few different charities but now that Heart of Haiti is on my radar it’s a product line I keep going back to for unique, beautiful, handcrafted home decor items. We have a lot of birthday’s coming up in my family and I’m eyeing a few pieces from this product line for their gifts as well. Honestly, what’s better than giving a gift that gives hope? I love knowing that by purchasing from the Heart of Haiti line I’m helping to support local craftsmen and artisans in Haiti.

This summer while I’m entertaining in our Zen Garden I’ll have my Heart of Haiti lantern on the table and sharing with everyone how they, through the purchase of a handcrafted home decor item from an artisan in Haiti, can give hope to thousands.

Stop by and visit Heart of Haiti on Facebook to see more about this amazing product line, I promise you you’ll be impressed! You can also tweet the line at Heart of Haiti on Twitter.

Have you heard of the Heart of Haiti line before? Did you check out their line? Do you support companies that love to give back?
