My husband and I have a terrible tendency to go out to dinner a lot. I mean, way more often than is necessary and to a point where it begins to really diminish the value of date night. How is date night supposed to be special when you already go out 3 – 5 times per week? Sure, having that kind of flexibility in both our time and our income is nice but it does take away from date night being a special occurrence. It’s something we’ve been working on.
Here’s what we’ve been doing to make date night just a little bit more special for us:
How to Make Date Night More Special
Menu Plan So Date Night is Unique
I’ve been doing a lot more menu planning so that there is an actual meal plan at home. That keeps us from defaulting to “Ugh, let’s just go out. It’s easier.” We’re saving money and eating healthier so that’s a total win. Plus, now date night is something we look forward to rather than just something that happens for no reason.
Choosing New (More Expensive) Places
We’ve also made a list of the nicer restaurants we haven’t been too because they are “too expensive” and making a plan to go to them. If we are only going out once per week, rather than 3 – 5 times per week, spending $75 – $100 on a dinner isn’t such a big deal anymore.
Dressing Up for Date Night
We are also making a point of dressing up for date night. My nicer clothes tend to be my work clothes although my office is so casual that I can easily wear jeans and t-shirts every day and be totally fine. I found that when we went out for our date nights I would either wear trouser jeans or khakis with a blouse that I would wear to work or a work-appropriate dress. My husband did the same. Date night started to feel like an extension of the workday rather than something special to share with my husband. Now, I change clothes and dress up just a bit. My husband loves me in dresses so I’ve started building a collection of date night dresses to wear specifically for nights out with him.
I’ve also put together a collection of a few of my favorite summer date night dresses that you can snag for under $100! Just click through for more details on each item. 🙂
It’s been nice to dress up for my husband. He never said anything about my jeans and blouse attire, he never would, he’s not that type of guy. I just started to remember how much care I took to dress up for him when we were dating and I missed dressing up for him. I missed the days when I treated him as someone worth dressing up for rather than just another person I saw throughout my day. It’s been good for my perception of our marriage.
Do you dress up for date night? Do you have a special date night only wardrobe? How do you keep date night unique and something to look forward to?
