For the last few years, Brandon and I have been embracing the concept of intentional 5-minute habits. The idea is to slowly begin shifting your mindset and ultimately your lifestyle by embracing change 5-minutes at a time. It’s a long enough period of time for your brain to process that something different is happening but not enough time to create a major disturbance in your current schedule. We have found the practice to be incredibly helpful in helping us achieve the change we were seeking.

We have used 5-minute habits to help us declutter our home and our closets, strengthen our spiritual relationships, get better sleep, and become overall healthier and more centered.

Here are a few tips to help change your life in only 5 minutes a day

I promise you that each of these takes only 5 minutes (or less). You may find that as you incorporate these 5-minute habits into your life that they start to become 10 minute, 15 minute, 30 minute, or even 60 minute habits but, for today, let’s focus on 5 minutes at a time. Deal?

Wake up 5 minutes earlier

The first time I heard this I admit I rolled my eyes thinking, “What kind of difference can 5 minutes really make?” but it seriously makes a difference! The very first week I did this I found myself actually feeling less rushed in the morning. It was crazy because I had been thinking that I wouldn’t even notice an extra 5 minutes but I did and it mattered. It was actually enough time to put just a bit more make-up on or to toast a bagel for breakfast, things I would have skipped just a week earlier for 5 more minutes of sleep.

Benefit: You’re less rushed during your morning routine.

Make your bed

Maybe this is just me but dang it, an unmade bed is a major pet peeve of mine. It only takes 5 minutes to make your bed but it can help put your mind at ease. An orderly, made bed actually encourages your mind to relax because it sees things as being organized and decluttered. It’s worth investing 5 minutes into making your bed if it means your mind is more relaxed upon entering your bedroom.

Benefit: Your mind enters a state of rest upon entering your bedroom.

Exfoliate your skin and floss your teeth

Y’all know I’m a big proponent of skincare and investing in your health is always worth it. Whether you do it in the morning or in the evening, it’s important to take 5 minutes out of your day to wash your face, exfoliate your skin, and floss your teeth. Not only will it keep your skin looking cleaner and younger for years but it will help you avoid unpleasant trips to the dentist. If you ever build up to the point where you have a solid 15-minutes to invest in your skin at least 3x a week I recommend using this exfoliating mask. It’s one of my favorites.

Benefit: You look younger and feel healthier.

5-minute pick-up and declutter

One of our household rules is “leave the room better than you entered it” which essentially means to do at least one thing to clean up, organize, or straighten a room after spending time in it. This may mean loading the dishwasher, wiping down a countertop, straightening sofa pillows, folding a blanket, picking up dog toys, etc. Whatever it is, spend 5 minutes decluttering the space you’re occupying to help restore order and clean up your living space.

Go ahead and time it if you’d like but you’ll be surprised at how much you can actually do in 5 minutes.

Benefit: An organized space leads to a focused mind and a decluttered life.

Pray or meditate

I steal at least 5 minutes out of my day every day in order to pray but if you’re not the praying time I encourage you to meditate or do something else to nurture your spirit. Sometimes, I’ll pray a personal prayer. Sometimes, I’ll pray for family or friends. Sometimes, I’ll simply recite the Lord’s prayer and focus on the words and intent of the words.

If you prefer meditation (as my husband does) find a quiet space to do your meditation and focus. If you prefer aromatherapy, find a peaceful place to sit and center yourself. Taking 5 minutes to allow your soul to be fed is incredibly necessary to total wellness.

Benefit: It helps relieve the tension and stress you carry in your heart, soul, and body.

Share kindness and love to others

How long does it take to be kind to someone? How much time do you have to invest in order to offer a compliment, listen to someone, offer a hug, brew a cup of coffee, or do something else to offer kindness or pay it forward? There are thousands of things you can do and a lot of them only take about 30 seconds or less.

When is the last time you went deliberately and consciously out of your way to be kind to someone and do/say something for no reason other than to make them feel encouraged or loved?

Benefit: You contribute good into a world that so desperately needs it.

We often have this habit of thinking that change is a big scary thing that requires a major shift in our lifestyle but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can change your life little by little by embracing 5-minute habits that encourage mindfulness and joy. By embracing these habits we encourage ourselves to feel more self-love, create stability in our relationships, declutter our homes, become healthier, and live with less stress. Isn’t that worth pursing?

Do you take time to cultivate happy and healthy habits each day? What do you do to encourage kindness and mindfulness in your life and the lives of others?
