Lately my husband and I have spoken quite a bit about buying a house when our lease is up next year. We moved 4 times in our first 5 years together so buying a home wasn’t really on our radar until recently. Now that we are finally feeling settled we feel comfortable making a permanent decision. We sat down a few days ago to make our list of must-haves and nice-to-haves so we can research the market and get an idea of what to expect as far as price range. I would love a finished basement so we can put in a library and writing office. My husband said, “I just want a fenced yard so we can get another dog. I want a big dog this time.”
Naturally, I was excited. I love big dogs too. His comment led us down a 20-minute conversation of the pros and cons of each breed we would consider adding to our family. His list included a Great Dane, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, or Boxer. My list included a Basenji, Shiba Inu, Boxer, or Husky. In the end we talked ourselves in to adding 8 new dogs to the family once we buy a house. No one really needs 10 dogs but we somehow convinced ourselves it would all be ok. We also decided we were going to get a cat. Every writer needs a cat.
When I mentioned our plan to add 8 dogs to our family when we buy a house (which we totally won’t do by the way, we’ll really add like, 1) she said, “What is with you guys and dogs? Dogs aren’t all that great.” Sigh. So, with that, our friendship was over (just kidding, but seriously, don’t say something like that to me).
I explained to her that dogs are pretty amazing and that if you pay attention they can teach you a lot about life, love, and friendship. It was that conversation that inspired this post so now, without further ado, here are 5 life lessons I’ve learned from my dogs:
Time with Family is Time Well-Spent
It’s OK to Take Time for Yourself and Do Your Own Thing
Nothing Beats a Great Best Friend
Enjoy the Little Things (Like a New Ball or a Nap)
Enjoy Those Treats. They are Often Hard-Won
I’m going to give a huge shout-out to Chewy.com for sending my boys those Natural Balance dental chews. A couple of months ago I discovered that my dogs LOVE pumpkin flavored cookies (thanks to another Chewy.com shipment). Since my chiweenie is prone to needing regular dental cleanings and these dental chews came in a pumpkin flavor I thought they might love them. I was right! Not only are they getting a reward they love but I’m able to help keep their teeth clean. Natural Balance Dental Chews, for the win!
